Bohning  is a specific low-temperature hot melt adhesive designed for installing points, inserts, outserts, and pin bushings in carbon, aluminum, and fiberglass arrow shafts. Its low melting point protects the integrity of carbon shafts from heat damage, and it can be easily adjusted or removed with hot water.
Key Features and Specifications
  • Shaft Compatibility: Primarily formulated for carbon shafts, but also works well with aluminum and fiberglass shafts.
  • Melting Point: It has a low melting point of approximately 280°F (138°C), which is lower than traditional hot melts, reducing the risk of damaging arrow shafts during application.
  • Bond Properties: Provides a durable, flexible, and impact-resistant bond that resists cracking after repeated impacts into a target.
  • Reversibility: The bond is heat reversible, meaning components can be adjusted, replaced, or removed by soaking the tip in hot tap water for a few seconds.
  • Cure Time: It cures and reaches full strength as soon as it returns to room temperature, which is about 5 minutes, and this can be accelerated by dipping the installed component in cold water.
  • Quantity: A single 12-gram stick is typically enough to bond around 144 inserts.
  • Color: The adhesive stick is a distinct royal blue color.
Application and Adjustment
According to Bohning, the recommended application and adjustment process is as follows:
  • Installation:
    1. Ensure the inside of the shaft and the insert/point are clean.
    2. Screw a field point into the insert to use as a handle with pliers.
    3. Heat the metal insert over a flame (an alcohol burner is recommended) for about 15 seconds.
    4. Roll the heated insert onto the end of the Bohning Ferr-L-Tite Cool Flex stick to coat it with the adhesive.
    5. Twist the insert into the arrow shaft until fully inserted, wiping away any excess glue.
    6. Immediately place the point end of the arrow in cold water to set the adhesive quickly.
  • Adjustment/Removal:
    • To align components (e.g., broadheads with vanes), dip the point end of the arrow in hot tap water for about 10 seconds. The heat will loosen the adhesive, allowing for rotation with a broadhead wrench or pliers.
    • To remove a point or insert entirely, use hot water as above, but pull the component straight out with pliers instead of rotating it.
